Cheese Puffs Wild Swimming Club
Welcome! ๐
We're the Cheese Puffs Wild Swimming Club, a group who swims ~3 times a week in Lake Washington in Seward Park (Seattle, WA) and beyond. We swim year round โ but our organized swim season is mid-May to mid-October.
Find more details about swims on our Facebook group. (Please confirm โgoingโ on FB event if you plan to attend โ it helps us keep track of who to expect and who may be in the water.)
The Cheese Puffs, named for our bright orange safety floats, are inclusive of all swimmers/ speeds/ body type/ gender/ race/ nationality/ age/ ๐ณ๏ธโ๐
All who participate in colorful Cheese Puff events must swim at their own risk.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a wetsuit or any special gear to swim with the Puffs?
The only equipment you need is a swimming safety buoy, which you can buy on Amazon or at swimming stores for about $25 (we have extra for beginners or forgetfuls). Like lap swimming in a pool, a swim cap and goggles are useful. During the summer, the lake is warm enough for many to swim "skins" (sans wetsuit) but it's a personal preference. Some Puffs also use flippers and snorkels.
What if I'm not a very strong swimmer?
That's fine! The Puffs are inclusive of all swimmers, speeds, and body types. There's usually a range of speeds at each swim, and people self-organize and look out for each other.ย
Is swimming in Lake Washington safe?
All who participate in Cheese Puff events must swim at their own risk. We think it's pretty safe, especially since we always swim together, use our bright puffs, and have support watercraft (kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, etc.) when we're swimming for long distances or more than 50 feet from shore, per Seattle city guidelines. You can monitor water quality at lake beaches here.
What's the lake temperature these days?
King County maintains a few local temperature buoys here.
